Classes with Carolina Improv

Carolina Improv Company classes are designed for adults and recommended for persons 18 or older. Our courses are designed for a variety of students – those who want to perform comedy as well as people who want to study improv for personal/professional development or fun. To be successful in anything you do you need to be able to communicate and collaborate in the moment. Key improvisation techniques will help you to think on your feet, create new ideas effortlessly, actively listen to others, and work productively inside team environments.  Our workshops will help you learn to read any audience and will heighten your professional flexibility, making it easier for you to accommodate anyone in your life from clients to family and friends.

By teaching the fundamental and advanced skills of improv comedy, we make it easier for you to engage in the scene and relationships on stage. We do not encourage you to be a “funny” person. As the art of improvisation becomes easier, and your own sense of humor becomes more developed, you will create more honest and truthful work, your confidence and comfort level on stage will increase, and comedy will be the inevitable (and hilarious) by-product.

Experience levels are never an issue as we tailor feedback to each individual student so mixed experience levels are never an issue. We provide an environment perfect for all – experienced improvisers, aspiring actors, CPAs, attorneys, customer service representatives, and every other average John or Susan venturing into the world of improv comedy as a break from the weekly routine. Escape the real world and take a well deserved break – it’s like a play date for adults. Be a child for a few hours every week!

CIC uses improv training techniques that accelerate the student’s growth in ways other places don’t. While the quick gags of other improv clubs may evoke laughter from an audience, we believe dedication to both the fundamental skills upon which quality improvisation is based, and the presentational nature of the artform, can create an incredibly personal experience that will inspire awe as well as laughter.

Our improv curriculum focuses on scenic and short form improvisation, geared towards format, character, story structure and more. Emphasis is placed on empowering the individual improviser, “finding the game” in scenes, and developing an honest sense of play.

Learn to have fun, accept ideas, be positive, support others, pay attention, “almost succeed,” make eye contact, find your creativity, accept your own ideas and be more flexible. You’ll be amazed at how the lessons apply to your life both on and off stage. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Be prepared to have fun, to learn, and to laugh!

“Improv classes have been key in helping me make some much needed personal changes. I had been through about 10 years worth of very difficult circumstances with my family. I had become withdrawn and had no confidence in myself in social settings.”
“Improv also gave me the confidence to leave a dead end direct sales job and get another one that I felt good about and believed in. I’m no longer afraid to approach people and tell them what I do. I am able to make more confident decisions and speak out without the fear of rejection”

Acting for Improvisers

Acting for Improvisers Workshop

WHAT: Acting for Improvisers will focus on “living truthfully under imaginary circumstances.” By sharpening your acting skills, you’ll discover how you can “truthfully” inhabit a billion lives, make your scenes important, deepen your relationships, and start improvising in a way that will continue to surprise and excite you and the audience!

As improvisers, we have the world and beyond at our fingertips; however, we are often stuck within our own perceived boundaries.  Do you find yourself repeatedly playing similar characters or just versions of yourself? Are you noticing that you have a stock set of emotions, or that your choices are becoming predictable? Do you feel that you sometimes lack a strong stage presence? Aha, the best kept secret of improv is that Improv Is Acting!

We can all do more to make in-the-moment choices, rather than falling back into the defaults we don’t even realize we’re doing. In this workshop, we will look at some basic acting fundamentals such as: making meaningful and balanced stage pictures, moving on stage in a way that effectively enhances a scene, and projecting to our audience via voice, body language, and facial expressions. Using short, scripted scenes (no memorization required), we will explore ways to broaden our range of characters and emotions which can enrich characterization and on-stage relationships. In other words, we will be building our improv skills to consciously give backbone to the choices we make and through this process, develop and present stronger scenes.

Gibberish

Gibberish

WHAT: Some have mastered the art of speaking volumes without saying much at all.  The Art of Gibberish will focus on not only the spoken word, but the other 90% of communication.  As improvisers, we often become infatuated with what we can say to add to the scene or to “get a laugh” from the crowd.  Through body language, facial expressions, and voice inflection, this class will help any improviser or professional better convey their message.

The class will also focus on the audible and obvious side in the world of Gibberish.  We will create your own dialect that will convince your scene partner and the audience of your new language.
By the end of the class, floopitz chimas wingkinks tingkinks reepitatas blinks.  Hoopitz.

WHEN: Dates: Feb. 22 & 29 at 7pm

WHERE: Carolina Improv @ Uptown Theater, 10177 N. Kings Hwy, Myrtle Beach SC
