Classes with Carolina Improv
Carolina Improv Company classes are designed for adults and recommended for persons 18 or older. Our courses are designed for a variety of students – those who want to perform comedy as well as people who want to study improv for personal/professional development or fun. To be successful in anything you do you need to be able to communicate and collaborate in the moment. Key improvisation techniques will help you to think on your feet, create new ideas effortlessly, actively listen to others, and work productively inside team environments. Our workshops will help you learn to read any audience and will heighten your professional flexibility, making it easier for you to accommodate anyone in your life from clients to family and friends.
By teaching the fundamental and advanced skills of improv comedy, we make it easier for you to engage in the scene and relationships on stage. We do not encourage you to be a “funny” person. As the art of improvisation becomes easier, and your own sense of humor becomes more developed, you will create more honest and truthful work, your confidence and comfort level on stage will increase, and comedy will be the inevitable (and hilarious) by-product.
Experience levels are never an issue as we tailor feedback to each individual student so mixed experience levels are never an issue. We provide an environment perfect for all – experienced improvisers, aspiring actors, CPAs, attorneys, customer service representatives, and every other average John or Susan venturing into the world of improv comedy as a break from the weekly routine. Escape the real world and take a well deserved break – it’s like a play date for adults. Be a child for a few hours every week!
CIC uses improv training techniques that accelerate the student’s growth in ways other places don’t. While the quick gags of other improv clubs may evoke laughter from an audience, we believe dedication to both the fundamental skills upon which quality improvisation is based, and the presentational nature of the artform, can create an incredibly personal experience that will inspire awe as well as laughter.
Our improv curriculum focuses on scenic and short form improvisation, geared towards format, character, story structure and more. Emphasis is placed on empowering the individual improviser, “finding the game” in scenes, and developing an honest sense of play.
Learn to have fun, accept ideas, be positive, support others, pay attention, “almost succeed,” make eye contact, find your creativity, accept your own ideas and be more flexible. You’ll be amazed at how the lessons apply to your life both on and off stage. NO EXPERIENCE NECESSARY! Be prepared to have fun, to learn, and to laugh!

Why Improv-Based Training …
If you’re thinking improv is about comedy, you’re right. Contrary to popular belief, laughter is a byproduct of improv-based training and not the objective. Improv techniques retrain the brain to:
- Actively listen
- Respond in the moment
- Be more creative
- Be accepting of ideas
- Be flexible to change
- Solve problems
- Take appropriate risks
- Learn from failure
- Work as a team
Laughter usually results from our experiential training because the situations are based in reality and reality is usually pretty funny. Studies show that laughter improves productivity and lowers stress. Additionally, adult learning retention is higher as a result of the laughter and of our “learn by doing” approach.
Getting To Yes With Improv – Aug 15-16 Myrtle Beach
Getting To Yes With Improv: A Workshop For Business Professionals
Fearless Speaking, Networking & Selling
WHEN: Thurs/Fri., Aug 15/16, 9am – 4pm
WHERE: Carolina Improv @ Uptown Theater, 10177 N. Kings Hwy, Myrtle Beach SC
COST: $195 early bird by June 30; $250 after July 1
WHO SHOULD ATTEND: Business owners, entrepreneurs, sales people, sales managers, coaches, speakers and anyone who wants to make more money or build better relationships.
Do you dread having to speak in front of groups and at networking events? Do you find it challenging to prospect for new business, secure repeat business, follow up on all of those business cards you’ve collected, get sales appointments and “close the deal”?
If you want to learn the 5 steps to getting to yes in business, keep reading!
The best way to improve sales and revenue is through the relationships you build, nurture and maintain. When you switch our mindset from “Speaking and Selling” to “Making Friends”, everything gets so much easier and ultimately we begin to hear more “yes” than “no” in your sales pitches. To build trusting relationships you need to be able to C.L.O.S.E™:
- Connect through Commonality
- Listen Actively
- Observe Behavior
- Seek Opportunities
- Empathize
You already possess these skills. Unfortunately you often forget to use them or forget that you have them. These important skills are the “soft skills” that some people take for granted or don’t find valuable (compared to other necessary business operating costs). The bottom line to improving your bottom line is this: people like to do business with people they like, know and trust and the key to that is RELATIONSHIPS.
The good news is that you can improve these innate skills through improvisation (improv) training. And for some this too sounds scary. Some think it’s only about comedy and performing because of how it’s been portrayed by television shows like “Whose Line Is It Anyway?”. Performers use improv to collaborate and brainstorm ideas through active listening, observation, storytelling and acceptance of others’ ideas without judgment. Improv comedy shows are shows without scripts, just like life. And by the way, we are all performers because we are always performing (selling) for colleagues, clients, friends and even family. Improv teaches people to not worry about failure and to work better with others. All of this leads to building better relationships and the ultimate “YES” we’re all looking for!
In our upcoming two-day intensive “Getting to Yes with Improv”, you will learn how to wake up your natural abilities to network, build relationships and sell authentically in a safe environment with peers experiencing the same challenges. This intensive is interactive, stressing “learning by doing”. You might be uncomfortable at first but that will disappear quickly as you bond with others feeling the same way. And the best part, you will laugh while learning!
